Sadly, we note the passing of our president, Carol Watson. She has guided our lodge through many happy seasons and gave of herself willingly. As of this writing, I have no details. She will be missed by us all. Last month (October) we met at Luna’s with an expanded group, including Grand Lodge 2nd Vice President Pauline Richmond and State Trustee Central Pamela Buldo. Our own membership was well represented, and a good time was had by all. Discussions related to our winter schedule and the upcoming holidays. Next month’s meeting will be at Luna’s at 6:30 PM, on the first Wednesday of October. Come and join the meal and conversation. For the kids: February can’t March, but April May. As with most “Italian” food, the Italian Meat Sandwich is “All American”. Seemingly made up of left-over beef from a wedding, Al Ferreri of Al’s #1 Italian Beef, in Chicago, put the concoction together. Grilled “wet”, “dry”, or “au jus”, it stayed under the radar for many years. His sandwich was made “au giardiniera”, but at the San Jose fairgrounds, the Italian Society made their sandwich wet grilled with onions and sweet bell peppers. The crowds would typically wait in line for over 45 minutes for the treat. In the Monte Poggiolo area of Italy humanity has been present for at least 850,000 years, the earliest of which were the Neanderthals., National Scholarships are again being offered; check this issue of Il Leone for details. Also, the University of California in Fresno offers students Italian-oriented scholarships … call them for details. Say it in Italian: Chi dorme non piglia pesci ...Those that sleep catch no fish.
